Government decides to build the new Kosovo power plant
July 15 (Kosovo Times) - The Government of Kosovo has taken the decision to build the new Power Plant “Kosova Re” with the capacity of 2000 MGV costing around 3.5 billion Euros. “Together with our partners we are going to solve the energy crisis in Kosovo and we will start using the great potential in the energy sector”, Prime Minister Thaci said today while announcing the decision of the Government of Kosovo to start building the new Power Plant adding that this is a historic project which will mark a turning point in the economic development of our country; “This is a good day for Kosovo. This is a decision on a historic project, the largest ever in Kosovo”, Prime Minister said. The plan of the Government of Kosovo is to build the new power plant, to rehabilitate the existing Kosovo B power plant and completely shut down the Kosovo A power plant which is considered the largest polluter in Kosovo. The plan is that all the work should end by 2015 or at the latest by 2017. The representatives of the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, the International Civilian Office, European Commission and USAID said that the construction of the new Power Plant will not just stabilize the energy situation in Kosovo but will also boost the economic development of the country. Thomas Yazdgerdi from the US Embassy said that the USA strongly supports the project. Kjorton Bjornson from the European Commision said that the largest concern of the EC is the operation of the Kosovo A plant which needs to be shut down because of serious health risks and therefore the European Union supports the construction of the new Power Plant. “I think that this is a good day for Kosovo and I congratulate the Government of Kosovo for this decision” Bjornson said.
