Ten year old from Kosovo among the 14 worldwide winners of the competition on gender equality PDF Print E-mail
June 9 - Gender equality in school, house care, employment and love is what Lorik Kelmendi from Peja/Peć chose for his drawing on the question of equality between men and women. His work convinced the jury and he is one of the fourteen children from across the world, aged eight to ten years who are selected as winners of this competition.

For the third year in a row, the European Commission launched an international drawing competition on gender equality on the International Women's Day on 8th of March 2009. The competition under the patronage of the Belgian Princess Mathilde called on children all over the world to express their vision of gender equality.

Ten drawings were selected in each of the beneficiaries participating in this initiative and sent to Brussels. Recently two drawings per geographical zone were then selected by a jury of 49 European children. Their choice was essentially focused on education and the right of boys and girls to go to school, to study for a profession etc.

The winning drawings come from Algeria, Benin, Bolivia, Dominican Republic, Egypt, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Kosovo, Malaysia, Mexico, Somalia, Togo and Ukraine. All of them will be included in a booklet which will be distributed in the schools of the participating countries. In November 2009 an exhibition of the winning drawings will be inaugurated in Morocco.

The European Commission Liaison Office to Kosovo will organize an award ceremony for Lorik and nine other Kosovo finalists in September. Besides the EC Liaison Office, the Evaluation Committee for Kosovo was comprised of the Agency for Gender Equality from the Prime Minister's Office, the Ministry of Education, Science &Technology and a representative of the Civil Society network 'Kosovo Women's Network'.

Equality between women and men is a fundamental right, a common value of the EU, and a necessary condition for the achievement of the EU objectives of growth, employment and social cohesion. First gender drawing competition was launched in 2007 and since then almost 60.000 children from all corners of the globe, aged 8 to 10, have participated.

The drawing competition in Kosovo was launched by the EC Liaison Office on 9th of March 2009 at the 'Ismail Qemajli' primary school in Pristina.
